Re: [RC] Try a female vet before ...a male trainer. was Vet Phobia - A. PerezRe the suggestion: "Try a female vet before you send her off to a male trainer." While this may solve the immediate problem, one does not always have the luxury of chosing vets -sometimes you have to take who you can get. If the 'vet phobia' is a 'male phobia', this needs to be addressed. A horse should be calm and respectful of anyone working with it, regardless of gender. Desensitization is often sucessful with phobias: try to recruit some friends to 'play doctor' with your mare (people she does not know). Have some anticeptic and other 'vet-smelling' things on hand to simulate the experience. Stage lots of brief, pleasant encounters, starting with only 'good things' from the 'vet' (carrots, scritches, sweet-talk), then SLOWLY adding in more threatening (looking in mouth, handling ears, picking up feet, fake shots with needless syringes, e-lyting or worming etc). Keep the sessions short, try to stop just short of elicitng a fearful reaction. ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number Voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
