Re: [RC] completion awards (long) - Barbara McCraryMy husband now makes the redwood plaques for Swanton Pacific. We add professionally silk-screened brass plates to the plaque, but the redwood is grown here, milled here, and made into trophies here. I had a chuckle a few days ago when someone was remarking about T-shirts being tiresome, or some such complaint. That person wanted mugs. This reminded me of the time that Castle Rock ride gave pewter mugs and after rider received a few of those they would have been happier with T-shirts. It's all a matter of perspective, isn't it? One year, money was very tight, but I was determined to put the ride on anyway. I made rump rugs. I waited until polar fleece went on sale at Wal-Mart and then went to every Wally World in 4 towns to get enough. I sewed for days. I sewed at work at the ambulance company, on the clock, between runs, drafting my partner to match up and cut the straps for the rugs. With every blanket, I thought of the colors that the riders used and the colors of the horses. Making bets with myself, "Jo will pick this one, Tess will pick this one, this would look great on a chestnut, this one needs to go to a junior", etc. I enjoyed making those. A lot of love for my friends went into those rugs. And my partner got something out of it, too. We got married a few weeks ago. You can imagine my feelings when one of our anonymous surveys came back one year saying that "something must be done about the awards" that I give. Something was done. I raised prices for the first time in 12 years. I cut out the catered dinner. I got storebought awards. I'm still making some of the awards. But most will be storebought. Too bad, I think. Oh, I do give "nice try" awards. I make them. They are different from completions. Last year, I only gave one. It was a good ride. Nuff said, come to All Kidding Aside CTR in Ohio in August. You'll have a good time. Maggie Herlensky =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
