I honestly don't know what the mechanism of action is in decreasing flies in the poop, but alot of people also feed the DE as a 'natural' mode of intestinal parasite control. The thought being that the roughness of the DE acts as sandpaper against the parasites and evokes them to drop off or die or whatever. The primitive respiratory systems of insects consist of little paper-thin sheets--these are cut to shreds in the emerging adult flies by the little micro-sharp edges on the DE.
