Re: [RC] Was LD /Completion Awards - m l

Putting on an endurance ride is alot of work. I
personally think if you don't stay for the awards
banquet, you don't get the award. Ride managers go
through alot of work for the awards, the dinner etc.
I have left rides before the awards, and went and got
my award. The only time I usually leave a ride is
because weather is bad or I have plans. Most ride
managers like to give these awards out and want people
to stay.
I really wish at some of these rides the awards were
worth staying for. As a rider, I love the T-shirts,
but I really like awards that have the date on them.
There are some ride managers, I won't mention names,
that give the same award every year that has no date.
What is the purpose of that? It gives nothing to the
rider for their accomplishment.

Where is that? I don't think I have ever seen
that.

I've been to quite a few rides in the SE where you
get your T-shirt at
the pre-ride meeting or when you sign up. Then they
just read the name of
the finishers at the awards and they sit there. The
reasoning is that it
lets people leave after they finish if they choose
to without hassleing
the manager for their award...also, they feel bad
for people who don't
finish and want them to have their T-shirt anyway.

Usually the managers who do this are the softer
hearted ones who don't
want to leave anyone out and are most worried about
beginners, etc. same
sort of folks who give "participation trophies" to
every last kid on a
ball team. Trouble is, it trivializes the entry
level accomplishments and
really leaves no goal to challenge them other than
the *really* high ones
like year end awards or BC.

Right now, a completion would be a *big* deal to me
again because I've
had three straight non-completions. At my last
non-completion I was
given the T-shirt at sign in. It's a really nice
T-shirt but I have no
urge whatsoever to put it on since I didn't earn it.
I just put it in
Josie's drawer since she finished that ride.

Another thing is that I like seeing people walk up
when their names are
called *after* the ride because I may remember
riding with someone on the
trail and it gives me a chance to put a name with a
face. (Oh THAT'S who
that jerk was! >eg<)

If anybody wants to critique pre-ride or awards
meetings *there*'s a new
subject. :-)
