[RC] Alternatives to Beet Pulp - David & MaggieThe price on beet pulp pellets at my local feed store (Springerville AZ) has jumped from just over $10 to over $16 in the past year. We stopped buying beet pulp when we ran out of hay. We now feed a beet pulp based complete feed from Kent called Golden Pride. It is about $7.50 for 50#. Cheaper by the ton. Our horses get nothing but Golden Pride, no hay, no grain, no pasture, no supplements. They needed to put some weight on, but we didn't expect them to gain an average of 100# each in six weeks!! Kent owns several other companies, and I think they all carry this feed under different names. Check out their website for more info. They have retailers over most of the country. We buy the stuff for about $300 a ton, which feeds seven horses for just over two weeks. Keep in mind, this is all we feed. We did away with 20# of beet pulp, 25# of grain, 4 square bales of hay, 7oz of weight gainer, 7# of calf manna per DAY. Now they each get a five gallon bucket of Golden Pride. They munch on it until they are full, then nibble at it throughout the day. There is some grass trying to grow, but it's just enough to keep them busy. Ask anyone who was at Scioto Run how our bunch looks, now. Yes, this is pricier than what we were used to feeding, but so worth it. Oh, and did I mention that they poop less? ;o) Maggie Herlensky in Ohio Danny the feedstore owner was so happy to see us last time, he gave us two free kittens for being such good customers! Of course, as much advertising as I'm giving Kent, they should be throwing in free cat food!! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
