One of the first fillies I ever raised (full sister
to our stallion Abu Ben Surrabu) was sold to the Santa Rosa area as a
yearling, and died of rabies at the age of 4. (I think that was about 1977
or so.) Several of the ranch personnel had to undergo rabies shots as a
result. They likewise suspected infection from a rabid skunk in her
case. :-(
Years ago an Arabian ranch in
Nicasio which is close to San Francisco had their stallion get rabies.
The state misdiagnosed it and the ranch then sent a mare to Ukiah to be bred
and she ended up with it. They were pretty sure it was a rabid skunk
bite. They were the only two horses of the entire ranch to get
it.......mb
