Re: [RC] [RC] award perspectives - Barbara McCraryIn the past, I have refused to sell an award for a ride to someone who didn't ride the ride. It's not a popular decision with the person who wants the award desperately, but it is my belief that only a person who completes the ride successfully should receive the designated award. As Maryben describes riders who want to get home ASAP after the event, I also have had that experience. I used to be hurt, as if I were putting on a party and no one wanted to come, but I have been persuaded to believe that no one is doing this because they didn't like the ride, but because of other factors. It does make it difficult for the RM to hand out awards early, as I refuse to give them out until I have seen the finish records. Then, of course, I am left with the job and considerable expense of packaging all the unclaimed awards and sending them out. Being a ride manager has its downside on occasions, but we love sharing our trails with others enough to offset the nuisances. As I mentioned, ride > volunteers This should really confuse everyone. I have no problem with them giving a t-shirt to a non-completer who wants one *after* the awards, or even earlier if the pulled person asks for one and is leaving. I just like the t-shirts to be handed out as awards at the awards meeting. I have bought t-shirts for my crew before that were just like the one I "won"...but at the awards I want those people who may have finished next to last, middle of the pack, or wherever to have their moment in the sun where they get their name called and walk up and get something to represent their success. :-) Angie McGhee Wildwood, GA God grant me the Serenity to enjoy a sound horse when I have one.
