Re: [RC] Equine ulcers - gastrogard vs generic tagamet - Truman PrevattWhen my wifes horse came down with West Nile, after we cured the WN we had an ulcer from the treatment. He probably had a low grad residual ulcer from the his race track days to start with. The dose of cimetidine for him (about 1000 pounds) was 8 grams every 8 hours for 10 days - tappering off the last few days. We got the 200 mg (human size) at Walmart. The vet said that was about the cheapest way to buy it. That worked out to 120 tablets a day ( 40 every 8 hours). You also need to be pretty religious about sticking to the 8 hour schedule. He was very good about eatting the tablets in feed so he got his feed broken into thirds and got a midnight feeding. If I remember right it cost about between 12 and 15 bucks a day since I bought Walmart out and had to get some at Walgreen which was a little more expensive. Compare that to Gastrogard which I think is about 60 bucks a day. It seem to clear it up on him. I have some friends going the Gastrogard route now. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
