Re: [RC] Equine ulcers - gastrogard vs generic tagamet - Susan Garlinghouse, DVMAlong those same lines, however, there was a recent abstract in JAVMA (I think) about the efficacy of a generic compounded form of omeprazole that was NOT effective in treating gastric ulcers. So better to try cimetidine or ranitidine in horses before the generic omeprazole, if you can't afford the Gastroguard. BTW, we use ranitidine in the foals at the CSU hospital and it works great. Stops those little guys from grinding their teeth in a heartbeat. Susan G You betcha. Used it for years with considerable success before Gastrogard came out. Also used a similar drug called ranitidine--more expensive than cimetidine, but less expensive than Gastrogard.
