Re: [RC] [Guest] Beta Blockers - TypefUh ... I think I need to get some education. I just got put on blood pressure medicine (Lisinopril) and for the first time in 10 years, I can actually exercise and hike without running out of breath. I also notice my legs don't get tired when I'm doing my conditioning rides (haven't made it to an endurance ride yet since being on it, so don't have that experience yet.) I also went on a jog-a-dog fundraiser and actually jogged almost two miles, only stopping once. Now if you knew me, you'd know that exercise is a 4-letter word in my vocabulary, and I don't walk, let along jog. So being able to do that without any walking or jogging up to that event is totally unheard of for me. I can't wait to go up to the mountains to camp and see what happens. Before, I'd wake up in the middle of the night hyperventilating because my body wasn't getting enough oxygen, I guess. If I can jog now, I for sure must be able to stand elevation. We pretty much gave up hiking at elevation because I just couldn't breath. Now back to this beta blocker thing ... it's in blood pressure medicine, huh? I guess I gotta do some research. Mine must not be that because I feel like Superman these days! :) Jackie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lynn Kinsky" <lkinsky@xxxxxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, May 08, 2003 5:08 PM Subject: Re: [RC] [Guest] Beta Blockers Laura lit@xxxxxxxxxx I am asking for a close friend. Does anybody ride using beta blockers? The doctor told him endurance and ctr riding is too strenuous of a sport to use be using a beta blocker. He is on a beta blocker for his heart, and he is 41 years old. Which is the approxitmate median age for endurance riders. Please post to the ridecamp list. Thanks in advance! LauraThe original blood pressure med my doctor prescribed was a beta blocker, but after I fainted off my horse a couple times in the summer heat at a walk (my heart rate couldn't get up enough to pump the blood at an adequate rate for cooling), I went back to the doctor for a change in meds! I am now taking an ACE inhibitor and a calcium channel blocker and neither drug, singly or together, seems to inhibit my ability to do aerobic activity. If, however, the only drug that will work for him is a beta blocker -- well, he's hosed: he'll likely have to give up his sport (nothing is worth a heart attack or a stroke -- been there done that!). But that's for him and his doctor to determine. -- Lynn Kinsky Santa Ynez, CA http://www.silcom.com/~lkinsky =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
