Re: [RC] Twitch for loading - superpat

It occurs to me that since your horse will load, perhaps you need only have
him load, and load and load....until standing in the trailer is easier than
backing off.
Don't try to force him to remain in the trailer. But as soon as he unloads,
have him load again....and again....etc. Eventually, he should stand if only
so that he does not have to load again.
If this still does not work then I would have him work hard once he unloads
so that standing in the trailer is easier than getting off. I would lunge
him right at the trailer entrance until he tries to load himself, but don't
let him load. Just keep him working. Then when he is good and tired, ask him
to load. I will wager that he will not want to step off. If her does,
repeat.
Use a long lunge line so that he will not injure himself from going in a too
tight circle.
I used this method one hot summer day and my horse was dripping with sweat
but she begged to go into the trailer. (this was a horse that had refused to
enter the trailer necessitating a six mile walk home in the rain the
previous evening. She never refused again).
Good luck,
Pat

Subject: [RC] Twitch for loading

I recently posted re: my troublesome TWH gelding who walks
right one the trailer but backs right off if I leave his head.
The recent posts have made me wonder if it is wortwhile trying a
twitch to teach him to stand still once loaded? I have seen
twitches which are designed to be attached to a cross tie so it
does not have to be held on to. My objective here is to just
get him used to standing on the trailer: no eating, no backing
off: just stand. Also was wondering of Ace or quietex might
help him not be quite so nervous while on the trailer.

Thoughts?
