Eight inches in 24 hours is simply incredible.  I can remember only one time
in 50+ years that we had anything approach that, and it produced one of the
major floods of the 20th century in our part of the country.  My sympathies
go to all who have had to endure such weather and its results.
Our 7" in April has been a bit unusual based on the past several years, and
the pattern is bizarre for here, too.

Well, just back home from a trip to the store that was quite an
adventure. I honestly didn't realize how bad things were and I knew they
were bad. Barbara...you said you got 7" of rain for a wet April? We had
8" of rain in the last 24 hrs! Couldn't go to the grocery store because
the road was 3' deep in water out front. Schools are closed. The
Tennessee River has huge trees floating along all in it, ramming the
bridges. My neighbor's kids are riding a Wave-Runner in their cow
pasture. Highway 41 between Chatt & Nashville is closed due to a mudslide
which took out the road.
