Re: [RC] Fat or Carbs - rrohwer RohwerSusan, I am a little behind on reading posts to RC, but am catching up. I just read what you said about forage, forage, forage and I just want to say. Yahoo and good for you. It amazes me when I read RC and see everyone concocting this and that to feed their horses. I am pretty much into hay. Figure that is what they have been eating since time began for the horse and that is probably the best feed for them over all. OK, before I get beat up here I do feed a grain/mineral mixture in small amounts, have sweet feed on hand for a treat, use beet pulp at rides (my mare is a very easy keeper, so use the beet pulp as a mash at rides more for the moisture than anything), and have alfalfa pellets in my pocket all the time for treats, also have a salt block on hand in the corral for them to lick on. Sometimes when I read all that everyone out there is doing for their horses I feel like I am being neglectful, but my horses seem healthy and happy. My main mare does well when we compete. So please don't go beating me up, this is just what works well for me and I guess I won't worry anymore that I am neglecting my horses in the area of feed. Also a believer in live and let live, so all you mash mixers out there please continue to do what works for your horses. I enjoy reading about what all is going on in the feed area. Becky R. and Picara the easy keeper. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susan Garlinghouse" <suendavid@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: "superpat" <superpat@xxxxxxxxxxxx>; "Shellace A Williams" <enduranceracer@xxxxxxxx>; "Ridecamp" <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, April 25, 2003 8:32 PM Subject: Re: [RC] Fat or Carbs The best person to ask is Susan Garlinghouse. I can tell you that she will probably tell you that most horses do not need grain in any abundance, if atall. A good quality hay, some alfalfa and beet pulp.Let me modify this just a little. I do think grain has it's place in a performance horse's diet, it just shouldn't take the place of forage, forage, forage. High grain rations are a big part of why gastric ulcers are such an issue in race horses and stalled show horses. It's also a big factor in colics when overfed trying to maintain energy and body condition. My point has always been that you don't NEED to feed tons of grain to keep a horse healthy and fit and full of energy. Lots of top quality forage, beet pulp (also a forage) if more concentrated calories are needed, no more than 4-5 pounds of grain per meal tops with no more than 10 pounds a day total, and added fat if necessary. I've worked with a ton of hard keeper horses and never had to exceed those limits to maintain weight (as well as solve a lot of metabolic problems).
