Nope, no overload on the kidneys--just simple fluid mechanics, where there
is more pressure on the "outgo" from those particular veins due to the extra
abdominal weight of the pregnancy than there is venous pressure to push the
blood along.  Hence fluid leaks out into the tissues.  :-)
