Re: [RC] pregnant mare with stomach swelling - DESERTRYDR1Angela, It's called Ventral edema. It's an accumulation of fluid along the midline in a pregnant mare in late term. It may be more common in older mares, but my mare had it when she was pregnant at 7 yrs old. I believe it is considered more or less normal for some mares, possibly due to the overload on their kidneys due to pregnancy. As someone else mentioned, always keep a real close eye on a pregnant mare. I found the book Blessed are the Mares to be an excellent source of information. jeri =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
