Re: [RC] pregnant mare with stomach swelling - Milinda Ellis
I had a mare do this with the first foal she had
for us. I didn't know her foaling history (or if she was a maiden).
She went overdue, and she also acculumated the swelling (it's fluid!!!). I
just pulled the file on that mare (who is now deceased). The edema showed
up about 2 weeks before she foaled. We watched her closely and conferred
with the vet during the interim (a really good thing in her case) as she
wound up having trouble foaling. I don't know if it was the fact she was
past her due date (and presented us with a large foal!), the fluid accumulation,
a combination, or just a fluke. At any rate, everything that could go
wrong did, including dystocia!!! Definately have your vet look her over
and make sure everything is okay. Also have him/her on standby when this mare
gets ready to foal. You cannot be too careful.
We raised another foal from this mare the following
year. No problems whatsoever and no more edema. She's the only
mare that ever did that here. Who knows!?
Another questions for you horse people. I
have a bred mare that was due to foal on the 14th this is her first so no
biggy that she is late. The only problem is that she has this funny lump
or fluid sack that popped up. It starts right between her front legs and
goes down her whole stomach. It doesn't seem to be sore but I am just
dumb founded on what it is and if I should worry. I have a call in to
the vet but he hasn't called back HELP...Angela
