[RC] Man O'War Grandsire of Seabiscut. - Laurie Durgin


"Man O' War" by Cooper and Treat.1950 He sired Hard Tack in 1926 who Sired Seabiscut. Seabiscut had a match race with War Admiral, also sired by Man O'War in 1934 (21 wins). ".. . War admkiral won a succesion of victories. . ,By this time there was a aclamor for him to meet Seabiscut, a grandson of Man O'War through HartdTack, who had been making sensational history.A match race was arranged at Pimlico with a $15,000 purse for the winner. This match also was going to be one the "race of ages."The Pimlico track was jammed to capacity that November afternoon. War Admiral was a 1-4 choice with Seabiscuit gettting strong support at 11-5. The dopesters were sure that Charley Kurtsinger, who was War Admiral's regular jockey, would set a blistering pace, with Georgie Woolf , a famous hot spot rider, on Seabiscuit, "roaring through the stretch".Seabiscuit was a famous last quarter runner.
When the two took off on a walkup start, Seabiscuit went immediately to the front. The crowd was puzzled, they had not expected Woolf to try to set the pace. Nor had he, but War Admiral didn't want to run that day. Seabiscuit, running easily, increased his lead to four lengths, but War Admiral didn't care, and refused to put up any competition.. . With War Admirals acqiescence he became the greatest money winner up to that time.. And , like this grndfather (manO'War), he had the personality that should, but so often does not, accompany greatness. "p. 147,148 Race took place 11/1/38.
Man O'War had a match race with Sir Barton called the "Race of the Century".Defeated Sir barton in a 80,000$ match race in Windsor Canada. His last contest. Oct. 12, 1920.
