We just gave 12 horses the first shot 10 days
ago. No visible adverse reactions.
(Did have one with a slightly sore neck from EETF
given a week later)
$15.00 each, do it yourself. Will give
the second shot 4 weeks after first.
At this time do not plan to give a third one
later.
Incidence of infection in horses with 2 shots and
time to develop the response seems to be quite low with less
threat.
Some of my reasons for doing it this
year.
This is a "new" disease in this country, no natural
immunity yet. Reports show that in the areas where it first appeared
there were large numbers of affected critters, and people, the first year, and
diminishing numbers in following years.
There were reports of positives for
antibodies among those with no symptoms, suggesting exposure alone may help
with immunity.
While there were no cases here last year, we are in
an area that is near or part of a major migratory bird route. My feeling
is that as the birds come north this spring they will bring WN with them from
presently infected places. If we can create a large population of immunity
this year the spread will be less all over.
Depending on what happens next, and what
information becomes available, as to the success of the vaccine,
incidences of infection, etc., I may, or may not,
vaccinate another year.
(The information that gives me these thoughts has
come from a wide list of sources. YMMV)
