Re: [RC] Sore back... Slipping saddle pads... - Susan_BothernPoor Star. Nothing worse than being rubbed to death. You must of felt bad for her. I always wash my new saddle pads before using and find that this helps with slipping. I don't think Star's problems are only b/c the saddle pad is slipping. Improper saddle fit sounds like part of the issue. It might be too narrow for her build. Now for the girth gals -- these hurt also and can't be blamed on the saddle pad. What type of girth are you using? Take time to pick up each front leg so the girth can settle in the right spot. If you are use to riding English and switched to a Western saddle you may be putting your saddle too far back. This will also throw off the placement of your western cinch. Western saddles fit over the withers. Breastcollar clip -- not sure why this would be making her raw if you are clipping on the "D" ring on the center of the girth. Make sure your rings are in the center of your horse. Sometimes you have to fidget with a girth to get it centered. Can't help you with the double girthing. What little I've learned tells me that a rear cinch isn't necessary if working on flat ground, but comes into play when hitting more rugged terrain. This seems to be your case. What is it about saddles that is making it hard to fit your mare?
