Re: [RC] what is the best dog to gueard horses? - Lynn KinskyOh my goodness, with all the Southerners on this list and no one has answered it right yet:-). Angie you should be ashamed of yourself for missing this one. The answer is obvious, you want a good hound dog. Preferably a Coon Hound (Blue Tick or Black and Tan) will do nicely. The other option for those that want a larger critter is a Blood Hound. Great dog with people, but will raise hell if something is amiss around the farm. Well, for a southern dog, I'd take a Catahoula. But by and large the favorite on ranches (and pickup trucks in parking lots) around here appears to be the Australian Cattle Dog. As long as you mind your business they mind their's -- but they have a stare that says "go ahead; make my day" -- a three-legged old Aussie kept my 60 lb lab/pit bull cross out of its yard simply by staring at my dog! -- and I have no doubt they would carry through if you ignored their warning. -- Lynn Kinsky Santa Ynez, CA http://www.silcom.com/~lkinsky
