[RC] The Great American Horse Race of 1976 - JonniI found a book on this race completely by accident. I ordered two. One for myself, and one for a friend who I crewed for on the XP2001. This book is mostly photographs from the race, and some text and stories. It has been the best $17 I have spent. Great photos of some of the riders who are still around today. Because it was in the 70's, the hair, facial hair, clothes are SO dated! At times it is very funny to finally figure out the person in the photo is a vet you know, from his "younger years". The photos tell the story so well. As Tom said, it will never be repeated. The XP2001 was similar, but as I look at the photos from 1976, so very different. The photos show you a certain freedom and spirit from that time frame. Very hard to put into words, you would just need to get the book and let the photos show you the story. I found many of the on line book stores actually have it. Do a search: Title: The Great American Horse Race of 1976 authors: Curtis L. Lewis and Dennis D. Underwood It is a paperback book, photos well presented in Black & White. 224 pages. Rider list in the back. Everytime I pick the book up off the shelf, I get sucked in looking at these photos, and reading little snips from the text. Did you know Tom Sites received the key to the city of Hannibal Missouri? Anyway, get the book...read the story....
