[RC] trot out for stubborn horses - Andrea Day

Just my HO, but I'd say one of the issues that needs resolved is the fear of the whip--getting it out for short periods and rubbing your horse all over while talking, soothing, feeding treats etc is good, so is putting it into a hip pocket and grooming--helps to hold a crop in the MIDDLE rather than on the handle at first. Start with crop, move up to 3-4 ft. dressage whip, then to larger, etc. Carry lunge whip and put it at your feet when working on lunge or freework in round pen--if you do so.

Also, I agree with cookies, etc, but is slow process. How 'bout a thin rope halter or chain under chin for immediate training? Combined with treats, this might be a way to get some results for the Spring/early rides you will be wanting to do. I really think a horse that doesn't move out to a tug on the halter is truly halter broke. (THAT statement will probably get me in trouble. Don't anyone bother to post a disagreement, it's just my opinion, and I won't change it.) I agree that practice makes perfect, but don't be training your horse to "drag."

Good luck
A.
