Re: [RC] Teaching the Trot-out to a STUBBORN Horse (long) - superpatI would guess that some basic steps may have been missed somewhere along the way. As with the trailer loading, it may be that you may have to go back to the basics and get that solid. But for starters, I would strongly suggest that you purchase or borrow John Lyons tape on desensitizing a horse to just about anything. Whatever it is that most upsets the horse is not what you start with. For instance, he will have you select about twenty items and line them up in order of the reaction the horse may have to that item. So you may start with a feed pan and then a grooming brush and then a piece of towel and work up to things that may get more of a reaction. With each item, you would introduce it to the horse and end up rubbing it all over and under the horse. By the time you get to the lunge whip or crop, you will find that the horse is pretty accepting and it is not such a big battle. The horse may be stubborn, yes, but that is no reason that he cannot be helped not to be afraid and to be trusting of you. Don't give up whatever you do. But check out some of the tapes of the trainers who are successful without being vicious such as John Lyons, Buck Brannaman, Clinton Anderson, Pat Parelli and the list is ever growing. What part of the country are you in? I will bet there is a trainer in your area who can help you resolve this probaby in only a session or two. Good luck...
