Re: [RC] Dressage Saddles for Endurance Riding - Barbara McCraryThis is an interesting thread about dressage saddles and which kind are the most comfortable for endurance riding. It is certainly a personal matter....different saddles fit people differently. Personally, I cannot ride a dressage saddle because the straight down position of the stirrups causes cramps in my hip joints. I don't like forward seats anymore, either (I used to ride a Stubben Siegfried, many years ago). The saddle I have now is about halfway between (or maybe just a hair more toward the vertical). It is an Arabian Saddle Co. Sylvan GP, and I first rode it on a 50 mile ride, cold turkey, because it was the only saddle I found that was wide enough for my wide-backed chunky Arab. I LOVE that saddle....it's so comfy. Not only are the stirrups placed right for me, but the twist is a tad wider than some other saddles I own and have ridden. Those other saddles, with narrower twist, are supposed to be comfy for women, but for me they put pressure on my crotch and caused severe and painful abrasion. When I first tried the Sylvan GP, I thought "I'm not going to like this", because the pressure was on my pin bones (bovine vernacular), or seat bones. But since the dealer allowed a trial of the saddle, which I did with GREAT care, so as not to scratch or otherwise mar the saddle, I took it out on two rides. I decided then and there that this was the saddle for me!!! This company markets the Solstice for endurance, but the stirrups were hung too vertical for me. To the person looking for the ideal saddle, keep looking until you find the one that fits your horse and FITS YOU. It's worth the effort. Do that for 50 miles and you can count on some *serious* lower back pain. Go for the dressage seat. I ride an Ortho Flex Express. It sits like a dressage seat.
