[RC] New horse Skat- Home - Roger Rittenhouse
A short post- NOT. We brought our new 6 yr old gelding , Shagya Arab home
today.
He had never been for a trailer ride, but was loaded a few times.
Carol and I went up to the Sun Arab Stables in Verona KY on Tues and
spent a few hours 'working ' with him in the evening.
We did have a bit of a problem getting him loaded, so we did a mixed
crash course of trailer loading. After about 1.5 hr, of assorted
methods, he loaded without anyone getting hurt. However, after loaded
and with the divider closed he thought it would be good to try an exit
by going UNDER the partition. This resulted in a small gash above his
eye.
Not too bad but some blood and I will have to watch it.
He pitched a fit before we started to roll but settled down within the
first mile. The closed circuit monitor sure makes the hauling less
stressful for ME.
He was a bit stressed at the first stop- only 10 miles out, but did
take hay when fed. We were not able to get the hay bag hung as
planned, so I improvised and hug a feed -nosebag - and kept it full of hay.
We stopped every 2 hrs and let him rest and load up the small feed bag
with hay. He did quite well. The trip took 6 hours.
He off loaded at home with no problem but as can be expected he was a bit
stiff.
We walked him for a bit then showed him the private pasture fence line
and let him go. He was eating grass and doing well.
This week will be busy with daily sessions with him and trying to get
back to riding Omni as well as my old mare.
Omni goes for his next stifle ligament injection next week.
While Skat is a bit green and somewhat 'flighty' I do believe he will
work out. He sure will be more forward then Omni.
I dont plan on getting on him until next week. We are going to to a
few trail walks in hand and work on the creek crossing, and just
getting to work together.
I will put Omni out with him this weekend.
Pictures will be placed on the web site and webshots.com- hopefully by
late tomorrow.
Let me again plug the Shagyas that Daunna has for sale. There are at
least 3 to 4 that I am sure will do well in Endurance. They are the 4
to 6 yr old range. Mostly Geldings but a few mares may be available.
There a few small ones- 14-3 to 15 H and not of a extreme large body
type that would do well for a JR/FW/LW
The prices are not low- they are about correct for the quality and the
breeding. Look to spend over $2000, but I am sure you can work deals.
IF I had the space time and finances - there are at least 2 more I would
take home.
All are very green, but they are are all well socialized and ready to
start. I think there may be only one or two that are going under
saddle.
If you want to consider one of these horses give Daunna Sellers a call

Will post when the pictures are on-line
