maybe rides less than 100 miles. But Karen Chaton just posted that she
recently did a 1 day 100 with only 4 checks with no problem.

for anybody who is having a problem with viruses, if you switch to digest
form that helps a lot too!).
-- I was mistaken about the number of vet checks on that 100 that I
mentioned. There were really only three (3) full vet checks during that
100. As an aside, another 100 mile ride in our region was held with a
similar low number of holds/vetchecks. No horses were treated, or in
trouble at either 100. I did read with interest come of the comments about
how all 100 mile rides in the US have XX amount of vet checks. Some do,
and some don't. We DO have a lot of riders who are competent enough to
ride 100 miles with very few checks and do it without causing harm to their
horses.
What are the differences between the WEG (needs to have x number
of checks) and a multi-day (doesn't)? Obviously, number of days. (Jerez
has successfully run as a 2-day 100 for years). But also: rider
motiviation.
**You got it -- it's all about the rider, and what they are willing to ask
out of their horse. As one well known rider said to me once, you have to
be willing to sacrifice your horse if you want to race. There is a risk
associated with riding no matter what distance or speed, but that risk does
go up a lot when you are racing.
Maybe in order to qualify for the WEG they should require the riders to
come over and complete all 5 days of Outlaw Trail. <bg> That would give
some of them a whole new perspective on endurance riding!
Not so simple as saying "experience has proven that more
checks/shorter loops" will solve the problem.
**You've got to look at the type of people each type of ride
attracts. There is a big difference.
Happy Trails,
