Re: [RC] mane and tail rubbing - Laurie Durgin

I had off and on problems with manes breaking off for 2 yrs. After many vet calls and him wiht no idea , except maybe fly allergy I finally tried something that has been working for me.It is MTG by Shapely products, can get at tack stores or in catalogs. It is greasy and smells bad but it works. I put it on  once a week or so. you can wash it off for shows. Two people  with the same mysterious hair loss, that they sjpent boo cood of money on vet testing told me to use it. I'd tried everything including medication from the vets and it has finally worked . My arab had 6" mane always broken off and some on tail too.  My vet was down to keeping him in ac barn with screens (ha) or moving. Said bug allergies take time to develop. But I had  4 out of 5 horses do this. I did figure out it got worse after humid rainy conditions, but that is when the but populations came up too. I think it is gnat or fly related, with maybe fungus. But what ever , this is the only thing that has worked and I tried everything suggested.

Subject: [RC] mane and tail rubbing

My daughter's 12 year old Morgan marehas recently started rubbing out parts of her mane and tail.  We've had her for 2 years, and this is a new problem over the past 6 weeks or so.  No changes in food, herd or lefestyle.  The horses are fed in their stalls, but otherwise are out to graze all day and night.  She does seem to be worse if she stays in her stall any longer than absolutely necessary to finish eating.  I've tried everything I can think of to get her to quit.  The vet checked her and didn't see any medical problems, so I'm thinking it's from bugs, but no bug spray I've tried has made any difference.  As of today, she's rubbed out at least half of her mane, and the whole top half of her tail.
My daughter is 16, and this disfigurement of her beautiful mare is wreaking havoc with my daughter.  Anyone have suggestions?  It won't cool off here anytime soon, as we live in central Florida, so waiting for frost is going to be tough.  Please help.  Thanks
