I feel like I need to defend my farrier.(!?!).. (and I'm pretty sure he
isn't even on ridecamp). He is a 30+ year professional farrier and a real
horseman. He comes from a long line of horsemen and literally grew up in
the horse business. He has been the only one to trim or shoe any my horses
for almost ten years. My horses, both barefoot and shod, have very healthy
feet. He has fixed some problem hoofs on horses that came to me as adults.
We evaluate each horse as an individual... I have one mare that only has
half a hoof from an injury and I was told when I got her that we wouldn't be
able to ride her much... He built a shoe that allowed the hoof to grow
enough to support itself over a period of a year and when *he* thought it
was ready, *he* suggested we left the shoe off and she has been sound ever
since. ..and no, he doesn't make a big production with an angle and little
ruler. Each hoof is trimmed to match that horses leg/shoulder/general
conformation. I figure if he can't tell a hoof is right after 30 years, I've
    got the wrong guy.

I don't mind saying that I'm very offended when he is lumped with all
    farriers into the
    'cheap-guy-down-the-road-who-wants-to-get-done-quick-so-he-can-go-have-a-bee
    r' category.
