Re: [RC] neoprene allergy? - Heidi Smith
Neoprene allergies are not uncommon. I don't routinely use boots, but I do
have one horse who breaks out in a rash when ridden with a neoprene girth.
As to the swelling under the boots--in addition to the allergy problem,
consider that you have also trapped heat under the boots as well, which can
be a problem. Most horses who interfere do so only when fatigued, so for
openers, consider just carrying the boots with you, and not putting them on
until the horse begins to tire. I've had folks who've been able to carry
them along until 30 or 35 miles, and only use them the last few miles of the
ride. This cuts down on the exposure time to the neoprene, the amount of
time the leg is subjected to heat buildup, and the amount of time there is
for sweat and dirt to accumulate under the boots. As an alternative to
neoprene, consider boots make of other materials--leather, etc.
