[RC] neoprene allergy? - Jon . Linderman
Last weekend I used rear ankle boots on my horse for the first time. He
has had some interference issues recently forcing me to opt for the boots,
but thats not the point of my story/question. The day after the event his
rear ankles and up from his ankles in the tendon space he was quite puffy,
which has never happened before. His front end was cool and tight. I
reasoned that the muddy course caused the swelling, which may or may not be
true. I took him to the ride vet when I saw the swelling and we both
noticed he was moving quite normal & she was not concerned. He didn't seem
tender or lame. I then got to talking with someone on a different chat
about her horse swelling up at a horse show in response to neoprene leg
wraps. Then my daughters dressage instructor told me one of her horses
swells up if he is ridden w/neoprene splint boots. I am wondering how
common this might be. Of course I can't be certain if he had a reaction
until I try the boots again. However it took a couple days for the
swelling to go down and he was left with some blisters almost like he had
"scratches" or "mud fever" as some people call it. Any thoughts on the
possiblity this was a reaction & perhaps how to prevent it if I have to use
boots?
Jon
