Funny story.
Some years ago I spent several summers on a FS
lookout. Also put on an endurance ride that used the trails near my
lookout tower. I kept a horse there and after hours, if there was
nothing going on, I would ride out and mark some of the trails.
One evening I hung the last ribbon for that
trip. I used my halter rope to toss over a limb while standing the horse
on a hump and standing as high as I could in the stirrups, pulled the limb down,
tied on a ribbon that flipped back up about ten feet in the air.
Climbed back to camp, about 400 yds up, unsaddled
the horse, and as I was going up the stairs looked back where I had just been to
see a bull elk standing on his hind legs EATTING MY RIBBON. I yelled,
whistled, didn't do any good, he just left the knot and walked
away.
The deer weren't too bad, cows will pull or eat
some, but the elk, especially the calves, will take down ribbons
overnite. I found if I put them back twice, then they quit, guess the new
wore off.
Never did have much trouble with
people.
