 I've had good luck with Ensure, Boost, or the like, 
before and at checks.   Also mix Red Bull about half and half with 
water, carry that and plain water.  Really like Goo or Power Gel,  use 
one every loop, maybe 2 if it's a long way, with plenty of water.   
Bananas are ok sometimes, at least in camp, an apple sometimes goes down 
ok.  If not the horse likes it.  Candy bars with lots of nuts 
sometimes.   Water is a must, even if it's warm.  Bottles filled 
part way and frozen, then filled will be fluid but cool for quite a 
while. 
Yogurt is useful post ride when you are not really 
hungry but need something. 
Nite before any kind of pasta is good.
