I've considered fish in my horse's trough, but I have one worry and hope someone can tell me whether or not it's valid. In addition to squitoes and bugs of all kinds, we, also, have a lot of birds down here. Now, wouldn't the fish in the trough draw the birds? Won't they want to eat the fish and take easy pickings which a trough would allow? And, doesn't certain bird droppings carry diseases that are harmful to horses? Ah, so many questions, and I have so few answers. Now, isn't this a much more productive discussion than that "sinful" sheath cleaning episode we just went thru? Aren't you glad that sheath cleaning only comes around once every three years? That's why I save some posts that are certain to repeat themselves, cause, sooner or later, they're gonna make a repeat appearance. I do think "Drop, Doogie, Drop," was the phrase that will forever stick in my mind from this year. cya, Howard (it's too bad that Bette's couch is over 2,000 miles away for me. I've had goldfish in my troughs for nearly 15 years now. I may clean the tanks once a year - if that. There are no mosquitos around my pens. There is a small amount of algae in the troughs, but not much. Fish poop? It settles to the bottom and doesn't bother the horses one bit. My main tank has 3 fish in it - about 6 inches long and 1 to 1/2 inches fat. They have babies every couple of years which gives me feeders for the other troughs. --- Rae Callaway --- Tall C Arabians - SE Texas ----- Original Message ----- To: tprevatt@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: 8/30/2002 9:20:13 PM Subject: Re: [RC] There is a goldfish in my water!
I did that a few years ago, and then someone asked me about the "poop" from the gold fish, I never thought about that and dumped them all into my pond. What do you do for that? And why hasn't anyone come up with something that you can put into the water to stop algae that is not harmful to the animals? Also, with the snails, do horses not get flukes? I was under the impression that they did. certainly cattle and llamas get liver flukes and die from them. That is why I buy Ivermectin Plus for the flukes, but that is only for my llamas, I don't give the plus to horses, why is that? You are a rocket scientist, any answers?? amber ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Friday, August 30, 2002 6:33 PM Subject: Re: [RC] There is a goldfish in my water!
We have gold fish in all our water troughs. We have three 65 gallon and a 150 gallon spread around the place. All are automatic so we keep the same water level. They all have gold fish. We put the "feeder fish" in - 1/2 inch gold fish the sell to feed big fish. These suckers are 4 inches now! They never get fed. They have lived through two winters. We had two placostomus died the first winter. The person at the fish store said we would have to bering them in the winter - even FL winters.
So we replaced them with albino cat fish this summer. They are about 11/2 inches when we put them in. I swear we are going to have a cat fish fry soon. They are almost 6 inches long. Very little algae and no bugs.

I think first, I will get an automatic waterier put on the tank. Lisa Salas, the Odd fArm Something is always "fishy" here!
