[RC] Smashed Big Toe - Carolyn Burgess
Julie:
The good thing about a smashed big toe is that you can still function (i.e.,
ride) almost immediately (immediately if you don't remove your boot). About
a year ago, I dropped the ball from my gooseneck trailer on my big toe the
morning of a pleasure ride. The ball must weigh 20 pounds and I dropped it
right out of the gooseneck onto my foot (about a 4 foot drop onto my toe).
Broke the toe good and proper. Hooked the trailer, and went on our 15 mile
pleasure ride. 10 hours later when I took the boot off is when I realized
that I did indeed break the toe. It did smart, but it didn't stop me from
riding. It was a couple of days before I could stand a boot on my foot, but
I could put on sneakers and I never missed riding because of it. Also, this
was not my first busted toe, and it was not my last busted toe. I have
owned horses for 7 years and I have broken my toes 4 times (three from being
stepped on, and once from the ball incident). My husband has broken his
toes twice in that same time.
