Re: [RC] Embryo Transfer - Maureen A. Fager

When I was a student at Colorado State Universtiy, in the late '90s, I took the Equine Repro Class and also the Equire Repro Practicum, and so sent some time at the Equine Repro Lab. They do lots of ET's there, and train lot's of vets to do this procedure also. They have many clients, worldwide, that they do ET's and other repro services for (like store frozen semen.) At that time, it was my understanding that multiple ET's were allowed only with the SaddleBred registry, and the other registries that allowed ET only allowed one. The folks who use ET are quite varied: show, and I mean "A" and International type shows, show jumpers, really high level Dressage, Eventing, you get the idea. These folks have the money to spend--at that time, just the fee's for the ET was about $3000.00 which did not include the Stud fee charged by the stallion owner. The folks who invest in ET are folks who can affort to spend the money, the resulting foal is an investment,--it may be worth thousands when it hits the ground. The donor mare can contiune her show/event schedule, or, valuable mare genetics can be presevered from a mare who may not be ablt to carry a foal full term. Not all ET is "bad", but this ruling will affect the breed registires of course.
It was known at the time that there were folks in the AQHA who were having more than one ET foal a year from some mares, what they were doing with them I don't know. It does not suprise me that this ruling has happened, as the practice has been going on for some time.

    Happy Trails,
