[RC] Loaded Truck-Trailer - Roger Rittenhouse
Last week I loaded up the 'new' F350 and 'new' 24ft LQ with Carol (wife)
and 2 horses. I included what I thought I needed for a 3 day trip. All
the important stuff feed hay beer food clothes etc. I tried to cut
out what I did not 'really' need.
I had 30 gal water in the LQ and 30 gal on the roof, 3 bales of hay
about 50pnd grain, 3 saddles and other horse supplies.
The truck pulled just great. I KNEW the trailer was there, but the
truck did the job. The transmission never got over 165 deg, exhaust
temp never over 900 deg. The auto tranny shifted as it should most of
the time. I ran in OD except when it 'hunted' the gears then I took it
out of OD.
I knew this thing was loaded. I stopped at a scale topped off with
fuel.
It weighed 20,760 pnds.
Now here is the point. This truck is rated to pull 20,000 GROSS
COMBINED WEIGHT.. that is pull AND STOP.
I carried no more then I thought I needed for the trip. I was amazed
how much it weighed.
I would guess just about EVERY Truck and LQ, 2 horse with supplies is
over the max weight for the truck. None of the truck axle weight were
over, but the TOTAL on both truck axles was over the max gross weight
of this truck at 11200 my GVW was 11650.
SO I was over what is posted on the door plate.
I still had more stuff to take as in more water in the truck bed
tanks. And more hay and more human supplies.
I got home and we took a sweep to pull out stuff we will never use, I
guess I took out 200 to 300 pnds.
I will still be over the legal and mfg weight rating of this truck.
Just how the heck do you all pull those BIG well loaded LQs with these
one ton trucks? I thought I would be ok. No way.
Now the truck DID handle very well and stop great. I did a
brake-pad and rotor upgrade from stock. I could tell the difference
when empty.
Is everyone aware if we get stopped and exceed the GVW listed on the
door plate we get fined and stopped.??
If we exceed the mfg Gross COMBINED weight listed in the manual and
NOT on the door plate the DOT - hwy cops will not do anything since it
is not on the vehicle.
BUT if you get in a wreck and the insurance investigator weighs the
whole rig and you are over - they can drop your coverage???
Maybe some comment from the insurance pros and legal pros would be
nice..
>From a drivers position - I should have bought the F450
I just dont know how to drop the weight.. this LQ is a 24 ft box Alum 3h
stalls with 'horse junk' in the front stall.
I wont travel without horse water.
I suggested I leave Carol and her horse home?? HEHEHE BOMB
I guess I could fill up with human water at the 'last gas' store .. if
they have water.
Seems the old BIG TRUCK motorhome was a better deal? Never came close
to over loading that.
I know this will weigh over 22k when I load up some of the business
items.. NOT a good deal here.
I guess I should have gotten a 22ft box and no LQ and just roughed it
? NOT!!
Carol wont drive the MH and likes the F350 - says we will go drive a
F450 just to see how she likes it...I sure cant afford that now.
Well just some ramblings- FYI-0 I am sure most have no idea how much your rig
weighs.
Roger R - not a real happy hauler BUT I LOVE my truck and the LQ
trailer.
