The lame horses just have to beg the question - WHY ar ethey lame? Was it a freak injury (which assumes they are actually doing something in most cases) or is it a genetic weakness, which should not in the end be bred anyway. I have had people come to me and say, well, my mare keeps going lame after about every third day, so I thought I may as well breed her. I don't breed those mares until and unless there is at least ONE vet who can acertain that this is not a genetic deficiency, at least to the best of their knowledge and examinations.
Finally, to me, unless a mare HAS proven herself in some way, I don't want to award her a breeding career - perhaps a foal or two from a top notch stallion while she IS proving herself, or comes from a lopng line of proven horses, and not halter horses, but actually able-to-go along-the-way proven.
My fear is that the huge majority of undereducated owners will continue to breed to the Flavor of the Season halter stallion. So many do now, thinking either they will get a champion and/or make a gob of money - like - RIGHT!
