Re: [RC] [RC] shoes reopened...NOT - Deanna German
I have not had a problem with traction since I found a good farrier and
switched to steel St. Croix wide web eventers from flat steel shoes. Rocks,
mud or slick grass. I'm pretty sure that the flatwork I now do with my horse
helps too. Lots of bending, trotting figure eights, lateral moves, etc.
Like another poster, my horse is barefoot for a significant part of the year
(4 - 5 months). No difference in hoof quality, no change in size. She can
have her shoes pulled and go for a 2-3 hour trail ride the same day. It's
all in the competency of the farrier.

I agree with this and terrain is a biggie in the equation.
My major concern with the plastic shoes is the slippage on
wet grass and I can't remember how often we come across wet
grass. Will be interesting to see how these work for Reno.
When we rode on very steep hills with 90% rocks in Ok. he
had a hard time getting traction with the steel shoes and a
lot of this has to do with the way he travels and how tired
he was.

Penny
