[RC] re navicular horse - Brenda L. Kossowan
Hi gang: I waited to see what the rest of you had to say about the
navicular horse, and am concerned that the emphasis is on old issues
with the coffin bone when this owner really needs to be looking at
what's happening with her horse right now. From what Angie described,
the horse appears to be suffering acute laminitis, regardless of
navicular, and needs aggressive and immediate treatment, ie: Bute, lots
of cold water circulating over the feet (stand him in a stream if
possible - get his feet into some ice otherwise) and cut the feed to a
few flakes of hay per day, followed up by corrective trimming and shoes
to relieve the stress on the coffin bone. Of all these, cooling down
those feet is the most important - the sooner the better.
