I think Roger is right on the money with these
suggestions. I especially think that emphasizing the regional level in LD
is important, as different things have been working well for different
regions. Here in the NW, although we give times, placings, and PNER points
for LD's, there is so much emphasis on year-end awards that require consecutive
completions that many LD riders try very hard to ride at least
semi-conservatively to keep their completion strings intact. I've vetted
rides in the PS where we essentially judged every LD for BC, and they were
placed accordingly--another really great system. Both systems work well in
their individual areas. But to attempt to make some sense nationally out
of the results of such divergent systems just isn't logical.
Even though there are many folks who may never ride
longer rides than LD's, they are still our "entry level" to the sport for a
great many people. As such, the emphasis needs to be on education of
riders and helping them to adequately care for their horses. Demographics
of areas are different, so different strategies for accomplishing those things
in different areas makes perfect sense.

1. Drop ALL national level LD award programs Placing ,BC,
high mile etc. 2. Keep Lifetime mileage in the LD miles program 3.
Award REGIONAL placing and Regional BC and high mileages for those Region
that want to support the concept. As we do in the SE.
4. DO NOT
force all regions to comply with the LD program. Let the riders decide in
each region how they want LD to be implemented and rewarded.
5. List
the LD ride in EN JUST as is now done. Placing for the regions offer
placing and ride list for others. Just report it as it is being done by
region. Keep regional statics only (placing BC mileage etc.
6. NO
