[RC] Chocolate icing - Rides 2 Far
Well, experiment number one over with. Took the icing out of the fridge
and realized that for a true experiment it needed to sit out in the 90
degree heat all day. Left it in the barn till evening.
Oops. Ants discovered it, but fortunately most were just trekking down
the side and not stuck in it. Scraped them away. It was harder to measure
my usual 2 heaping Teaspoons to mix with, since it didn't heap. Put in
about 4 tsps. Tried to mix with Endurolites since had some handy. It
was harder to stir in than with yogurt or applesauce, but it finally
absorbed. Wasn't too hard to spoon into the syringe. The consistancy
looked a lot like the bought electrolytes in a tube and I thought this
might just work. Squirted a tad out getting air out and ants instantly
swarmed that spot on the ground.
Decided to give them to the pony I was getting ready to work. He'd never
had electrolytes but eats anything that doesn't out run him. I tried to
squirt them into his mouth and...no go. The 60cc syringe I usually use
is not open enough in the mouth to let the thick stuff out. Managed to
get some on his lips and around which he happily licked away. Looked a
little like dark lipstick. He thought it was great...does not mean Kaboot
will. I think maybe that if I'd had a used paste electrolyte syringe it
might have worked just right.
My recipe for icing called for confectioner's sugar, butter, egg, water,
& cocoa I believe. There was one on the box that called for vanilla
instead of cocoa which would probably be a good idea. It would probably
be a good idea to leave out the egg. My mom has quit putting it in her
icing because of salmonella threats. I think it's just to make it fluffy
anyway. Don't know how long butter would keep from going rancid if
packed with salt.
Thought I might try to find a bigger syringe to try again, but turned to
find one Australian Shepherd standing on top of the tack trunk cleaning
out the bowl ants and all, and the other Aussie lying outside the
tackroom chewing on my spatula. Experiment on giving chocolate to dogs
disputes findings of experts who claim dogs can't have chocolate.
I have another syringe to try, but am going to ask about it on a separate
post since the answer should go in the archives under another topic.
