[RC] Probiotics, Turnout, Cramps, and feed -LONG- - Stephanie Caldwell
Star and I just moved to a new barn; about 1 mile from
my house, trail oriented, etc... I love the place, and
she seems happy, but I've got a few questions that
hopefully y'all can answer for me.
1) I need to worm Star with her twice annual
Ivermectrin (we daily worm). She colics every time.
What do y'all think about giving her a dose of
probiotic the day before I worm her, the day, and the
day after? What bout yogurt, is it strong enough?
Star is turned out with the Misfit crew (a donkey,
pig, and cow... amongst other ponies and horses). She
herded the cow all day today, and after I spent about
15 minutes on her she developed a cramp (it looked
like a "thump" in the big muscle over her butt).
Slight short strided in her right hind, a little
tender, but nothing big. As soon as I felt her go
short strided I walked her for about ten more minutes
and she got okay. What causes this? Is it too high of
a protien diet, or that she's worked for 7 hours in 90
degree heat and hasn't had an electrolytes? Could that
have been the first step to tying up? What can I do to
prevent her from having problems this summer?
Her ration is about 12% protien (pellets and sweet
feed), 6 flakes of hay (4 grass, 2 alfalfa), 24 hour
turnout, Multi-vitamin (has a small amount of
probiotic in it), Flax seeds (equal to 1 tablespoon
oil) Joint supplement, MSM, Biotin, Daily Wormer, Vit
E & Selenium, and Garlic. I'm going to add e-lytes to
her feed this weekend, is there any problems with her
ration that I'm not seeing that can cause her problems
this summer? We ride about an hour a day, hoping to
increase that now that we've moved and have more room.
Stephanie
