[RC] Bylaws say an LD is... - Linda Flemmer

    Lif (and all),

I guess my gripe with LD (as it is currently run in
AERC) is that there is ZERO consistency from one
region to another. I believe that one function of
AERC is to set rules so that I understand what to
expect from region to region if I attend a ride. (And
no, I have never raced an LD but I have ridden them.
Yes, I do ride 50's and have done so for a long time.)

Here are the quotes for LD from the bylaws - no
mention of it being a training ride there. LD should
be what the majority of members riding LD want it to
be as long as horse health is protected. LD is NOT
JUST FOR training. Ask Maggie Price - she bravely
rode the Old Dominion LD after her cancer recovery,
and finished with minutes to spare. (For a lady using
two canes to get around and who previously rode at an
international level, it was a GREAT accomplishment.)

    Current Bylaws:

    (b) "Limited Distance Ride." A Limited Distance
Ride"is defined as an event in which the same equine
and rider cover a specified course of between 25 and
35 miles within a maximum time limit proportional to 6
hours per 25 miles and conforms to the Rules in effect
at the time of the Ride. The Limited Distance Ride
must be held in conjunction with an Endurance Ride and
must be open to all breeds of equines at least 48
months of age as determined under the AERC Rules.

    The NEW, proposed bylaws say:

Section 2. Limited Distance Riding is defined as an
athletic event in which the same equine and rider
cover a specified course of from 25 - 35 miles within
a maximum time limit (usually 6 hours per 25 miles
length) and conforms to the following conditions:

    1. The equines must be under the control of
veterinarians experienced with equines or endurance
    riding.
    2. All riders who successfully complete the ride must
    receive a completion award.
    3. The ride must be open all breeds and types of
equines at least 48 months of age.
