[RC] Traveling into Calif. - amber applegate
In searching for information on the Redwood Ride in Orick, Calif, here is
what I found out from the Oregon State Brand Inspector as to requirements
for bringing in a horse to another State, particulary Calif. and the
requirements of taking a horse out of the State of Oregon:
To transport any horse out of the State of Oregon, even for one day, you
must have a brand inspection. This doesn't mean that your horse has to be
branded. I just went through this with my mare and filly that were going to
be shipped to MO. It is $10 charge to come out to the ranch, then there are
three different certificates you can purchase. One is for eight days, one
for one year, and that year starts on Dec.31st thru Dec. 31st. If you bought
the year tag now, it would only be good to the end of this year.
The last is a lifetime inspection certificate, it costs the ten dollar fee
to come out and then $20 over that for life time. They take a picture of
your horse and give you a laminated card with picture.
Coggins and health certificate are required. Although the check stations
don't always ask for these papers, the inspector that I spoke with told me
that California in particular is getting quite testy on this issue and the
State Police that have attended the Inspector's meetings are now pulling
over out of State rigs and citing them. Then they are sending the
information up to our Capitol, Salem and then Salem jumps on the local
Inspector's butt and makes HIM issue tickets to the offenders. (Big Brother
is upon us) The inspector that I spoke with is not happy with this scenerio
as he said he doesn't want to be a cop, but that the laws are now forcing
him to do so.
The Coggins is good for 6 months and the health certificate is issued by the
Vet along with the Coggins results.
As for the Hay, Calif. is especially testy on bringing in anything to their
state. I had an email from a friend today that told me that when she went
through the bug check, they confiscated her hay. She said better to buy a
bale in Crescent City. Of course you will pay over $12 for a bale when you
get there.
The other thing the inspector said, is that if you try to "sneak" your hay
over the border, tell the Bug Check that you are coming back through in
however many days, and you want that hay held for you to pick up on the
return.Assuming you get nabbed.
So there is is right from the "horse's mouth" so to speak. This could be
good information for Ride Managers to have for out of State riders, and
especially Oregon where they are much stricter on the Brand Inspections.
Actually, this is a good thing, if you had your horse lost or stolen, at
least there is a record of the horse and word would be put out quickly.
