RE: [RC] Ponying - Snodgrass, Bonnie
You don't need a horn to pony as you don't wrap the lead rope around the
horn if you do have one. Of course, I just know that there are people who
will read this and swear by wrapping the rope around the horn. It is a bad
practice. You should have a chain around the nose to the ponied horse and
use a pretty long lead rope so if you have to single track on a narrow trail
or have the ponied horse cross behind you or something you have some line to
play with. Wear gloves! You want to have your right hand on the lead giving
signal to the horse being led. A rope wrapped around a horn is hard on the
pony horse and could turn your saddle or drag you off your horse if the led
horse crosses behind you and comes up the other side. And don't beleive that
old Dobbin doesn't need a chain. It's there IN CASE something goes wrong.
And believe me, my right arm is not stringer than a trotting or galloping
fruit loop er, horse!

The recent sad mountain lion story (riders' horses spooked by a mtn lion
while ponying a horse, got dragged off her saddle when ponied horse ran in
from of her) leads me to ask: what is the safest way to pony a horse?
Should there be some mechansim to allow for the line to break under extreme
pressure? How long should the line be? Other safety tips? Also, how can
you pony with an english saddle (no horn)?
Just a hypothetical question for me, as (so far) I only have one beasty.
