Ridecamp: [RC] ride distances

what is the maximum recommended continuous distance for horses to complete before coming in for a vet check? i heard of a person who does what she calls "endurance races",  12 1/2 miles out,  around the pylon, no holds, doesnt even stop, and 12 1/2 miles back to camp.  i would appreciate some input.    ed
