Re: [RC] protein - Susan G? - Susan Garlinghouse
The second cutting timothy should still have sufficient protein in it,
depending on what you're doing with your guys. Second cutting timothy might
have somewhat higher lignin contents, and thus lower digestibility, but it's
not an enormous issue, nothing to worry about until this year's crop comes
in (I'm waiting up here in NE CO, too). If the quality of the timothy is
really sub-par, you can add a bit of one of the foal pellet mixes (16-18%
protein). Beet pulp is great for a number of things, but as a protein
supplement isn't one of them. :-)

Subject: [RC] protein - Susan G?
I usually feed good 1st cutting Timothy (from SW CO) - I've had it tested
and the protein and minerals are good.
BUT with the drought I am still waiting to get Timothy this year. A few
weeks ago (when I ran out of last years hay) I got some 2nd cutting Timothy
from last year and am feeding that along with bermuda free-choice.
This Timothy isn't great, and I'm thinking I might need to add at least some
protein. Don't want to analyze the hay, as I'm just getting small amounts
now hoping for better Timothy later.
Will feeding more beet pulp be good thing right now? If that won't cover
the protein, is their a source other than alfalfa I can use?
Thanks,
Kathy Kelly
