Re: [RC] "Horses that kick" - Maggie Mieske
The same can be said for "heat" behavior. My sister's mare had the annoying
habit of "showing" heat EVERY time she rode with us even after she had
already been bred...this we did not know until the following fall when she
started to fill out in suspicious areas. My sister felt it was an "urge"
she "couldn't help"...I felt that if MY stallion could learn NOT to drop and
show inappropriate behavior then her mare should be able to as well...it
took several rides and immediate punishment whenever she did it, but we can
ride with her now. After it's been a long time between rides, she may start
to squat but my sister can control it now. It's not fun but a necessary
part of learning to ride with a group. I do think training is the key in
either case.
