RE: [RC] leadless ponying - Maryanne Stroud Gabbani
I would say that this is a good idea only in certain places. We've done it
plenty in the desert...but they have the whole bloody Sahara to play in.
Most of the time it's gone well, but one time a friend of mine and I went
out with our mares and my old lady (Nimbus, 27) tagging along. It was a
while ago so she was probably only 24 at the time. We let the horses gallop
along a wadi and up a hill...Nim was in heaven because without a rider, she
could outrun everyone. But my friend's baseball cap (yes, I know and she
refuses to wear a helmet, so what can you do?) blew off so we had to stop to
get it. Nim stood at the top of the hill, from which she could see the
stable and waited fairly patiently for a couple of minutes while Babsi's
mare was annoying about re-mounting. Then finally she came partly down the
hill, whinnied as if to say "That's it. I'm not waiting any more." and she
took off at a trot for home. The stable folk were somewhat surprised to say
the least.
You'd NEVER find me doing it in the countryside.
