Re: [RC] leadless ponying - Ed and Wendy Hauser
In the '70's when I was a trail rider and a cowboy wannabe, a friend was
leadless ponying a young horse on a September trail ride. This was in a
forested area of WI where there are about 36 sq. miles that are mostly
uninhabited. The area is still the same today, with the addition of a few
more houses, cabins, and deer shacks. There are lots of trail riders in the
fall and lots of hunters.
The ponied horse suddenly took a hard right turn and disappeared into the
woods. All fall the owners, and other saddle clubs searched the area. They
even had aircraft looking. There was no sign of the horse. The following
February the horse showed up in Minnesota, on the other side of the St.
Croix River, with some beef cows. The horse was healthy and in fine flesh.
He never would tell where he had been. Since the ground had been snow
covered since November, it speaks well for the survival instincts of the
species.
We don't leadless pony horses.
